I have a G4 Powerbook running OSX Tiger
I have a digital mpeg4 camcorder but i can't play the files on my mac. Once transferred from the camera to the hard drive the files appear with an .asf extension
I have installed WMP 9 the error message i'm getting says :
'windows media player cannot play this file because the player does not support this codec'
despite searching the web i can't find the codec required to play the files, please advise on which codec i need and how to install it correctly.
i have downloaded divx codec and installed it into the applications folder, as an inexperienced osx user i don't know if i have installed it correctly. i have an intermediate user knowledge off windoows xp
Dave,
You could try VLC. It has played many formats for me that neither Windows Media Player nor QuickTime could.

However, there are WMV formats that are unplayable on anything yet, such as DRM'ed WMA 9 audio.
If you're still unable to play it using VLC, you could try using a program such as ffmpegX to convert it to something else:

thanks for the quick response Kevin, I'll try what you said.
I forgot to mention that I also have a desktop PC running Windows XP. Windows Media Player 10 plays the above files fine, and when it does need a codec, it gives you the option to download the correct one.
Does this info make any difference?
Is there a way to search for required codecs on Windows for Mac?
QuickTime Player is to the Mac, as Windows Media Player is to Windows :-)
Windows Media Player on the Mac is only used when you need to. For all other times, QuickTime is preferred (and built-in to the system). There is a QuickTime plugin that lets you view Windows Media Player audio and video (not all, but most), so you could check that out (although it's shareware).
