Hi there,
I wish to listen to
www.jazzfm.com online. When I go to the site and press listen the windows media player pops up starts buffering and then crashes and internet explorer quits(I have also tried Safari which does the same thing)I have internet explorer 5.2.3 which as far as I can tell is the latest along with windows media player 9 also the latest for macs.I use an imac with OSX 10.3.9.
I have tried endless discussion sites to address this problem but none do and any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Also could you advise me by e-mail where to find your answer on the website discussion board(i.e. which category)as I am new to all this!

First, try the following. Afterwards reinstall the Windows Media Player:
Boot from your OS X Install Disk 1. After the installer loads select Disk Utility form the Installer menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Thanks for that Steven.Alas I forgot to mention that I have already run the 'repair disk permissions'from DU and still no joy.
I have a sneaky feeling that if other mac users try and listen they will have the same problems!

Nick,
Well, I just tried logging in from both Safari and IE and have not problems with either listening to the music.
Please note in my previous post that I not only suggested repairing permissions, but first repairing your hard drive.
Please do what I suggested. Then delete the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.mediaplayer.plist file, and the Windows Media Player Prefs file. Delete the Windows Media Player folder in your Applications folder. Re-download the Media Player installer and re-install WMP.
If you don't have more than 256 MBs of RAM installed, I suggest you expand your RAM to 512 MBs or 1 GB. Also be sure you have plenty of free space on your hard drive.
nickodemus - Jun 25, 2005 - 4:55 pm
yes I tried reinstalling WMP but to no avail. When I tried to run the install disk 1 as per your instuctions it would not run.I tried rebooting with the 'C" button depressed still no joy.
You mentioned expanding ram I thought that my imac apportioned this automatically unlike the older models where you could increase the ram accordingly?

Nick,
Is the OS X Installer you have a bootable disk or an upgrade disk (has the word "Upgrade" on the CD label.)
When you try to boot from the installer disk what exactly happens? Are you inserting the CD in the drive, restarting the computer and holding the "C" key down until the computer starts up from the CD? (gray Apple logo and spinning gear.)
Yes, OS X manages memory on its own, but you still need a lot of RAM for OS X. Unlike Mac OS, OS X requires a lot more RAM to run and some applications use a lot of RAM. I'm talking about adding physical RAM to the computer, not allocating RAM to an application.
nickodemus - Jun 25, 2005 - 6:55 pm
It just says OSX Install and yes I did what you mentioned.
skapp - Jun 25, 2005 - 7:10 pm
What version is on the installer disk? What is your specific hardware model?
nickodemus - Jun 26, 2005 - 8:34 am
version 10.1.5 i.e the original disc that came with my computer which is a 700mhz pcG4 with 256 MB SD RAM and a 40 GB hard drive.I upgraded to jaguar with the 'upgrade disc'about 18 months ago. What is strange Steven is that a few months ago i could listen with WMP but had not tried it since untill the London station Jazzfm relaunched its format.I have never changed(consciously)the settings on my imac so don't really understand the logic(Computers + Logic!) of whats happening. If I go to say the
www.shoutcast.com or
www.live365.com websites everything streams just fine albeit usuing the winamp system.Yet you say you can use WMP without a hitch!

Maybe when the site made their latest changes they did something that makes the site unusable to you at the OS X level you have. It could be a Java support issue, and because you are not running 10.3 or 10.4 your Java version is no longer compatible with the site. It might also be other incompatibilities, but Java is the only thing that comes to mind. You may have to content yourself with not being able to use this site until you've upgraded your OS X. I don't know what else might be causing the problem unless you have something running on your system that's incompatible with WMP or your OS installation has been corrupted in some way that the repairs you've done at my request aren't sufficient to fix the problem. Oh, and I'm using 10.4.1 here, so my system is not comparable to yours.

Thanks for that Steven.Yes I'm a bit of a laggard when it comes to paying for systems upgrades! Moreover I was told by Hewlett Packard that the software to go with 10.4 on my HP printer will not be ready until the autumn...
As it happens jazzfm online are broadcasting at only 28kbps but do have plans to go to 128kbps which would then make it ideal to record online using a fantastic piece of recording software called Audiohijack(
www.audiohijack.com)This ties in nicely with itunes converting music you record into an AIFF file which sounds alot better than mp3's.You can record off any internet radio station you like for 1,2or3 hours and then burn the music to CD.I then edit off the CD onto my Hi-fi minidisc deck all for free. And it's legal! At the moment I can listen to jazzfm in 128 on my DAB tuner off the Bath (UK)transmitter but because I only have one recording deck cannot edit.Hence my interest in trying to listen to jazzfm online.I guess I'll wait till the autumn and save up the pennies for the 10.4 upgrade by which time jazzfm will be on 128kbps.By the way if you are into any kind of music the audiohijack software only costs $15 and all subsequent software upgrades are free unlike some companies!!
A big thank you Steven for your all your assistance and patience to date
Rgds

Nick,
Well, I'm truly sorry we haven't found a solution for the WMP problem on that site.
As for Audio Hijack, I'm quite familiar with the product. I have a network setup in which I stream audio via an Airport Express to my mini-stereo. I use AirFoil to capture Radio365 and iTunes radio and stream them too the Airport Express. I'm a big fan of the Dimensions in Jazz station, but it's semi-subscription station. You can get it on iTunes but only if they have an available "free" spot. Otherwise, you need to have Radio 365 to get it. My iTunes library has 1200 jazz-only tracks which are also on an iPod for travel. No Kenny G., Enya, etc. Mainline jazz only!

Sounds good to me! I shall certainly check out the dimensions station. You might like to check out
www.timelessmix.com put together by a guy in Seattle. Some wonderful bossanova tracks and some great melodies(Burt Bacharach etc)
