You need to download Stuffit Expander to open .sit and .sitx files. However, before we get to that, what kind of Mac do you have? If not an Intel-based Mac, you can download Flip4Mac's Windows Media Components for QuickTime for a simpler experience.

So, as I said, with an Intel-based Mac, you need to download Stuffit Expander which you can use to expand the .sitx archive containing WMP. Then you can use WMP.

I think that I installed the stuffit thing but this is the message taht comes up now. "The page “BBC News Player” has content of MIME type “application/x-mplayer2”. Because you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content can’t be displayed." How do I get a plug in installed for the MIME type?
Please

Since WMP was developed only for PowerPC and not Intel, it runs in Rosetta, the PowerPC emulation environment on Intel-based Macs. The plugin for Safari only works if you also run Safari in Rosetta. (You can do this by getting Info on Safari in the Finder and choosing to run in Rosetta.)

The alternative is to find out the address of the Windows Media stream at BBC. One was is to look at the source of the page. I would tell you what it is, but a RealPlayer stream comes up for me.

Notably, RealPlayer *is* now a Universal Binary, which means it will run natively on your Intel Mac. If you have a choice of RealPlayer over Windows Media, I would install RealPlayer and use that. Go to http://www.real.com/ and click RealPlayer Free in the upper right.

Thank you for trying to help but it does not work so I think that I will abandon it. I could not find anything called Rosetta anywhere. I did install Real Player though and that does some things but not the BBC things.

Thanks again anyway

If you can't find Rosetta when you File|Get Info on Safari in the Finder, then you'll just have to wait until Flip4Mac releases the Universal Binary version that will work with your computer. Keep an eye on flip4mac.com for details.

As of today, the Universal Binary version of Flip4Mac is available for download from Microsoft:
