TICKET ARCHIVE -> Windows Vnc V4.0 Client Problem Connecting to Macos X 10.3.7 Apple Remote Desktop
jchivian - Apr 1, 2005 - 3:53 pm
I have enabled the following setting on my XServe system running MacOS 10.3.7...
System Preferences
Sharing
Apple Remote Desktop
Access Privs
Allow VNC Clients with Password
...but my Windows XP client running VNC Viewer v4.0 errors out immediately after accepting the password with a popup that says...
VNC Viewer: Error
unknown message type
Do you know if there is a particular version of the Windows VNC client that is required, or perhaps a particular option with the VNC client that needs to be set correctly?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi JC
I don't have an XServe, but I use Ultra@VNC on an XP system to control a 10.3.8 system with no problems;

Make sure y have Apple Remote Desktop version 2.1 Earlier
versions won't work with VNC.

Sigh!
I've tried both suggestions without any luck. RealVNC continues to error with the unknown protocol popup and UltraVNC brings up a window for a fraction of a second and then exits. I'm going to try a different client system and see if that makes a difference.
I also made sure that ARD was at version 2.1 (actually forcing the software to update) but haven't rebooted the XServe as I don't think that's necessary. However, I may also give that a try just to be on the safe side.

this is a comment made by one of our other techs, see if it helps;
Make sure that your VNC client is using VNC Protocol version 3.3 only.
The setting for this is different for each client implementation I think.
On RealVNC this setting is under Misc. "Only use protocol version 3.3"
I think also you should also ensure the client uses "Full" or "Millions" of colors.

Still no luck. I've updated to the latest version of RealVNC and I've tried the lastest UltraVNC and both continue to fail. Since opening this question I've also updated the system to 10.3.9 (without issue), rebooted, and installed version 1.1 of the XCode tool kit (which I'll be updating to 1.5 later this afternoon).
Are there any other server or client settings that could possibly be causing this issue?
I'm not thrilled about the idea of doing a packet capture but I certainly could if you think that would help.
Thanks, JC

I'll put this back in New Questions. Maybe one of our other volunteers will be able to help. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help.

Is there any reason that you want to use ARD instead of the common OSXvnc server?
I use OSXvnc all the time as a VNC server and it works. The only thing is that copy/paste will not work if you have it in background mode. Background mode will make it run all the time, while application mode will run the app when you log in. The latter will allow copy/paste functions.
You should be able to run them both at the same time as well, just change OSXvnc's port to the non standard VNC port.

Hmm - My understanding was that ARD was built on VNC, especially when Apple told me how to make ARD accept incoming VNC client connections. However, at this point I'm willing to try a separate app if it will get me where I need to go. I'll google OSXvnc and see what I come up with.
Thanks, JC
