Hello Stephan

thanks for choosing macosx.com and I will try to give you some advice.

Firstly you don't say what Mac you want to do this with...

I will assume that you have an intel Mac which will make life pretty easy.

You have 2 options really to achieve this
1) use Boot Camp - this allows you to easily create a new partition for Windows in your free space (or on a separate drive if I recall correctly) then install windows and use the boot camp assistant to add the required special drivers to make it work right with the Mac
Caveat: you will now need a copy of Leopard to do this - the previous Beta version from Apple has expired and can no longer be used nor downloaded.
If you do this you can reboot the Mac as a "pure Windows PC" and as such while in Windows treat it as you would any PC (firewall, AV software etc.)

2) Use Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion to run the XP as a virtual machine. This has the advantage of not requiring a restart to get into XP and you can run XP and Mac side by side (you need plenty of RAM though as it is all shared) Again the XP virtual machine should be treated as any other PC regarding AV software etc.

Hope that helps
