I'd like to answer this question, I just need a little more information on your Mac. Is it PowerMac G4 (a tower computer, or the cube), an iMac G4 (a little dome with a stick and the screen sticking out), an iBook G4 (white laptop, says iBook G4 under screen), or a Mac Mini G4 (That little box, 6.5in x 6.5 in)?
Once I know this I can help you with the things about the AirPort card.
As for the base station, "Base Station" is Apple's fancy word for a wireless router with a 56k modem, USB, and two ethernet ports. Unless you plan on using the base station for using dial-up internet, controlling a printer and any wired computers, any wireless router would to fine. Make sure it's rated 54mbps 802.11g, and none of those 108, SRX, etc. things. Just simple 802.11g.
Once you have a correct AirPort card in your computer (which I will assist you with once I know about your Mac), follow the router's directions, using the mac equivilant programs to the PC ones it mentions (pretty much Safari instead of Internet Explorer)
When you have the network name and optional security set up, configure your mac to connect to that network.
P.S. Usually, the router's directions will say to hook up directly to a computer via a ethernet (CAT5) cable. Do this to set it up, and then when you have it all set up, move it to your high-speed internet modem, and set it all up.
I hope this assists you in your quest to 'go wireless'

I have good news and bad news.
Good news: Your Mac Supports AirPort Wireless.
Bad news: It doesn't support AirPort Extreme.
Yes, there is a difference. Regular AirPort is confined toe the 802.11b (11mbps) standard, whilst Extreme is 802.11g (54mbps)
The reason the Extreme card won't work is all about the physical shape and size of the card. The slot in your Mac will only fit regular AirPort.
So, If you don't need the Extreme card for another coputers, I would suggest returning it for what you paid for, and scour eBay for a regular old AirPort Card. (11mbps). They run for $50-$90, I believe. Once you have that, just plug it in to the proper slot on the inside of your PowerMac (make sure the computer is off and unplugged before you open it up)
Once the card is installed, start up your computer and run Software Update to make sure your AirPort software is up-to-date, and voila! you're done.
(Oh, and to connect to the wireless network, make sure the AirPort Menu Bar Item is loaded via System Preferences>AirPort, and click the menu and inside the menu you should have some options, and also the name of your network and any other network your signal picks up. Click on the name of your network, enter the passcode if you turned on security, and then you're good!)
I hope your wireless venture goes well!
