TICKET ARCHIVE -> Wireless Peer-to-peer Network Between Mac And Pc

I've just installed a Mac Mini airport extreme enabled. It's connected to the internet and I'd like to wireless share its connection with a windows XP computer WITHOUT using an access point.

I've tried using DHCP on my PC hoping the MAC could assign him an IP but this seems not true.

I'm a total lamer on Mac OS but have setted up in the past a computer-to-computer shared internet connection on Windows systems.

Could anyone help?

G'day.
This one should be pretty straight forward. I'll try to take you through it. I'm assuming you understand the PC side for setting up your network. I'll run you through the Mac side.

Firstly, we're going to get a link up.

Using a WLAN without an access point, requires setting up a computer to computer network.

Open /Applications/Internet Connect.app and select the AirPort icon at the top. Select "Create Network..." from the Network drop down menu.

Give the network any name you like. Unless there is a reason to assign a specific channel (like another competing network nearby) just use the default channel.

Make sure you select "Show Options" and enable WEP encryption, and give the network a password. You should make this password one that you don't mind sharing with those who you want to access the network - ie NOT your account password. Unfortunately the terminology is a bit misleading, as this is NOT a WEP password, but a WEP key, and so must be the exact number of characters or hex digits for the key length you select. Finally, hit OK, and your computer to computer network should be created.

While you're in the Internet Access application, I suggest you check the "Show AirPort status in menu bar" option. It puts a handy menu there which doubles as a signal strength meter.

Ok - you will need to tell the windows box to connect to this network with the password you created. It's a long time since I've done this on Windows, and as I don't have an XP box to check this, I'm afraid you're on your own.

Now if you set both the Mac and Windows machines to get their WLAN IP addresses off a DHCP server, (and there is none) they should both end up with a self assigned IP address in the 169.254/16 address space, and should be able to see each other. You should be able to ping each machine. Use the actual IP address, since name resolution between systems is a bit hit and miss if things are not set up exactly right.

Assuming you've made it this far, now we have to set your mac up as a router so that you can share your internet connection with clients on the WLAN. Fortunately, this couldn't be easier.

Go to System Preferences -> Sharing. Select the "Internet" tab.

Choose "Built-in Ethernet" from the drop down menu as the connection to share. Select the AirPort check box as the "to computers using" destination. (Interestingly, the AirPort options button will let you create the network that we just set up above - wow - I learnt something too :-).

Press the Start button, and you're away.

That should all work.

Please respond if you get stuck, or to let me know how you go.

Cheers
