I have just installed a Mac Mini. My first Mac venture after being a Windows user for many years.

I have an existing wireless network using a Belkin Pre-N router. Everything works fine including my HP PSC 2510 all-in-one printer scanner.

I added my Mac Mini and it works fine on the network.

I downloaded the utilities and drivers for the HP printer (Mac OS X version) plus all updates.

The printer appears in the printer menu/list

I can scan and print a test page from the HP utilities

I printed one page, once (print command while in Safari).

I have never been able to print in appleworks or safari since. No error messages. No explanation. Just "Stopped"

Meanwhile I can print either (a) from the HP utilities, or (b) from my Wintel platform.

Where d I start? I could troubleshoot this myself on Windows, but I am a MAC newbie and I don't even know where to start looking.

Norm,

Welcome to the Mac platform. Hopefully we can make your experience that much more enjoyable.

When you pull up the printer utility and you see "Stopped", have you tried to start the process again using the available menu options. Sometimes, for whatever reason (an error of some sort) it will stop the queue, and basically you just need to start them again. If that doesn't work, delete them from the queue and try again.

You are able to send test pages without any issues at any time right?

Thanks Scott,

I tried restarting and a progress bar appears, but it stops again. I have deleted the print job and re-printed with the same result.
Then I went back into the HP Print Director and was able to scan a page and to print a test page.

It just won't work as a regular printer using File-Print.

I checked the ip address and it is correct. The only strange thing I have noticed is that when I use the "maintain printer" function within the HP Print Director, it discovers two printers with the same IP (one might be the Printer-Fax, I am not sure.

One other point, the specific type of printer, a HP PSC Photosmart 2510, does not appear in the list of available printer types if I try to add it again with the MAC printer utility. I did try it as a "deskjet" and it printed a page.

Are my drivers just "lost" somewhere that the OS can't see them?

I revisted the HP driver/utility page for my printer and noiced that the available downloads had changed since the previous week.

So I uninstalled the previous version, downloaded the single option of software available and re-installed.

Everything works fine.

Previously there was a basline utility download plus an update download (and curiously an empty "tiger" update. Now there was just one download (the update) and the empty tiger reference.

Anyway, it works.
