I have a wireless network consisting of 3 PCs, an IMac, and an HP printer wired to one of the PCs, all on an airport. i just bought a Macbook and want to print wirelessly. I have seen several articles on using print servers and since i want to do this on the very cheap, is there a way to do so?

thanks!

debbe,

connect the printer to your iMac with the usb cable and turn "Printer Sharing" on in the "Sharing" preferences in your System Preferences of the iMac. When the iMac is running the HP should show up in the print dialog of applications running on the MacBook.

If you still want to connect the printer to the PC you may be able to use the parallel port on that PC.

That's the way I set up printing in my system - consisting of a PC, iMac and a PowerBook. My printer is also a HP (model 940c). I don't know if HP printers still have parallel AND usb connections these days. The 940c does ;-)

If this doesn't work please get back to me.

Hi
I got your response yesterday and I have not tried it yet -- I am a bit confused about setting the PC using a parallel port. Do you mean using a parallel cable? I have an HP 7410 and it does not have a parallel connector. It does say that it's wireless, but when I have it hard wired to the PC, the MACs cannot read it, only the other PCs. I will try relocating the IMac to the printer today and see if I can get the PC to work.
Thanks! I will letyour know how I made out.

Ok. I didn't know your printer had a built-in 802.11g wireless networking feature. You might want to take a look at this link:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...391194&lang=en

There you will find several howtos on setting up your printer in a wireless network. Especially the article on "Mac OS X: Setting Up an HP Printer in a Wireless Macintosh Network (Airport)" could be interesting.

The printer apparently doesn't have a parallel port, so my first suggestion won't work in your system.
