Try resetting the NVRAM, like this:

Reboot the Mac and hold down these 4 buttons:
Command+option+O+F(that's the letter "O" not the number zero)
Your Mac will boot to a text line. Just type the following:

reset-nvram
(and then press return, an type the next line)

reset-all

your mac will reboot and hopefully you now have sound.

That's weird, I suppose it could be as simple as your Windows media preferences being corrupted. Quit Windows Media player and throw your preference file for Windows Media Player, found at yourUserName/home/Library/Preferences/Windows Media Player Prefs, in the trash. Then relaunch it. If you still have the issue then trash them again, and this time download a new installer, reinstall it, and try it again. If it still doesn't work you can try to isolate the problem by logging into the machine as another user (create another account if none exist) and try opening Windows Media player and in that user, to test for sound. If you get sound in that user but not your own, your problem is somewhere inside you user's home directory, probably a preference file, but it could be anything else.
Good luck,

Benny,

Go to Applications->Utilities->Apple MIDI Setup. Open up the MIDI set up and make sure your audio output is set to 44100.00 After that is set quit the Apple MIDI setup and see if that helps.

That should take care of the trouble.

Do you know exactly what the file is? If it's a WMP10 file you just simply can't play it on the Mac no matter what. Those files contain DRM and specific to Windows Media Player 10 on the PC.

I'll say a lot of people have trouble with WMP but I really haven't. I had more trouble getting flip4mac to work right but once I messed around with it I really haven't used WMP since.

Have you tried playing it with something like VLC? Might check it out here:

Yeah that's what I'm saying. If the file (the tune you were trying to play) is a WMP10 file you CAN'T play it. There is no WMP10 for Mac. But there are WMP10 files out there.
