Hi
I've just bought a brand new iMac, which is great, but a number of people have been sending me emails containing occasional .wmv files. There is no application in the Mac suite that will open it (it really only includes Quicktime). What do I need to get hold of or download in order to be able to open them?
Thanks
Gazza

Hello Gary :-)

Sounds like you need Windows Media Player for the Mac. Click this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...x/default.aspx

Download and install WMP. Launch WMP, then navigate to the .wmv file you wish to open.

See if that does the trick!

Hi Carolyb
Thanks for your response. i went to the site, downloaded WMP 9 (about 7MB) and it sat itself on my desktop as Windows Media.sitx
when I double click on it I get an error message saying 'there is no application to open the document Windows Media.sitx.
I thought it was an application, not a 7 MB document.
Where do I go from here - do I need to download something else to be able to read the application?
I'm confused.

Cheers
Gary

Gary!

I completely forgot.. you need StuffIT Expander to open that file... I am so sorry... I haven't been to the Microsoft site for awhile and it completely skipped my mind.

Here's what you do. Go here: http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/download3.html

Download that file and follow the installation instructions. Stuffit Expander will open the Windows Media file you previously downloaded. When you have Stuffit installed, launch it, then look in your Dock, you will see the icon there. Click there and select, Keep In Dock. Drag the Windows Media file directly on top of the Stuffit icon in the Dock. It will automatically open the Windows Media file for you.

If you need further assitance... please don't hesitate to post back. And once again, please accept my apologies... Stuffit is a very important software for the Mac. It can open compressed files in a jiffy!

Hi Carolyn
Thanks for the tip on Stuffit. I downloaded that, followed your directions and it all went without a hitch. I tried opening the wmv files I had been sent and it opened them without any fuss too. Well done.
Thanks again.

HI Gary,

Another happy iMac owner! That's my goal... :-)

I'm glad you could get the files to work. Audio isn't exactly my long suit but I am trying to learn. Working with iTunes/iMovie/iPhoto... with audio... I've learned just from that software but so much more to go yet.

Anytime you need help with your new iMac, please don't hesitate to post here at Macosx.com.

Best regards,
Carolyn :-)
