When I try to launch Word (either and existing document or new document) on my iBook G4, I end up with an "Application Launch Failure" with the following message:
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "D
<>"
The same message, except specified for each program, happens when I try to launch the other Office programs.
Please let me know how I can resolve this issue...
Thanks,
Ryan

For some reason the entire text of the "Application Launch Failure" failed to show up. The entire message is:
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "D
<>"
Thanks

It happed again. I'll try breaking it in two
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "D
<>"

One more time, one multiple lines, if it doen't work, someone could first let me know how to ge the entire shared library error listed on this site. It is in the window I'm currently typing in, but fails to turn up in the posted message.
"D<
MicrosoftWord
>
Cabon;
Multimedia>

Hi Ryan -
When you hit "Submit" the server tries to parse any HTML that may be in your text, and so it starts stripping out stuff between the angle brackets. Try this: wrap your entire error message in CODE tags:
\[code\] ... error text here \[\/code\]
(remove all the back-slashes, I put those in just so the server wouldn't try to parse my response also)

Thanks,
I"ll give it a try. If the error text goes through completely, it will be as follows minus the [code] on either side.
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error:
[code]"D
<>"[code]
macbri - Feb 8, 2008 - 10:07 pm
Not quite -- I guess it's not liking that either. Can you just email the error text to
brian@macosx.com? Easier that way!
rweemhoff - Feb 8, 2008 - 10:09 pm
Following is the launch failure minus the [code] at the beginning and end and all the back-slashes
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: \[code]"D\<\Microsoft Word\>\<\Apple\;Carbon;\Multimedia\>\<\CFMPriv_DVComponentGlue\>\<\>\"[code]\

The Feb, 2008 - 8:09pm posting went through completely as stated. Everything is correct minus the [code] at the front and back and all the back-slashes.
Thanks,
Ryan

Nice one, I see it now.
I see that you're running OS X 10.3.x, can you also let us know what version of MS Office you're running?

A suggestion to try, which should only take a few minutes:
(1) Create a new user account. Open System Preferences, click on "Accounts" and go from there
(2) Login as the new user, and see if Word crashes
If so, then it's something system-wide causing the problem. If not, then it's local to your account, and we can narrow it down from there.

I'm running MS Office 2004.
I'll try opening another account as well.
Thanks,
Ryan

Failure is system wide. Word still fails to launch in a different user account.
I don't know if this helps at all. It's possible it failed to launch after software updates were installed. But I am not positive on this.

Yes, an update could be causing this... can you post (or email since they tend to be rather large) the crash log for Word?
It would be in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter or its parent folder. Take a look in the new user account you created (i.e. /User/new_user_name/Library/Logs/CreahReporter) since it should be easier to locate in a fresh "empty" account.

I do not see any crash log. Within the Logs folder there are "console logs", "directory service logs", and "software update logs". I looked through these and did not find any crash log for Word.
Maybe, I'm not in the right location. Please clarify. Thank

There's a "Macintosh HD:/Library/Logs" folder, and a "Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Library/Logs" folder. Make sure you're looking in the latter, from what you describe ("console logs" etc.) you may be looking in the system logs directory.
However, if you're in the right place and there's no log we'll have to try something else. The error you provided shows up in a couple of forums, and most times corrupted or damaged fonts are blamed. Try opening /Applications/Font Book. If you see dots next to some of the font names there may be duplicate fonts and you can resolve them as follows (this comes from the Font Book Help file):
Q: A dot appears in my fonts list
A: A dot next to the name of a font family in Font Book indicates that you have duplicate copies of that font family installed. Font Book can easily resolve this problem by disabling any extra versions of the font family.
To resolve duplicate fonts:
In Font Book, select the version of the font family that you want to use.
Choose Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
The selected version of the font is turned on while all other versions are turned off.

I was in the wrong spot. Thanks.
New location, still no crash logs for Word.
Duplicate fonts have been resolved.
Word still fails to launch.

You mentioned this may have started happening after a software update - was this an update to OS X or to MS Office? If it's the latter case I'd suggest re-installing Office to see if that helps. Don't just move the applications from /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004, actually uninstall it properly (instructions
here). Then re-install and see if it works.

Sorry for the delay, I had to get my parents to mail me the office start-up disk. They should arrive today or tomorrow.
macbri - Feb 12, 2008 - 3:31 pm
No Problem, we'll keep this ticket open until the issue is resolved. Let me know how you get on once your discs arrive.

Launch failure still exists after office was uninstalled and re-installed.
rweemhoff - Feb 15, 2008 - 11:36 am
I re-installed the entire computer and then re-installed office. Launch failure is resolved. Thanks
