I am having a problem with Office 2004. I have used it for at least 3 years and all of a sudden, when i open the aplication, the icon bounces and the startup window comes up, but after about a minute, the application just closes without any warning or message. there is NO "UNEXPECTELY QUIT" window, it just closes.
my friend said it might be something with the preferences. any suggestions? i really need this! i have already tried deleteing and re-installing the application and it is still happening

Hi Joek,
Problems with Office 2004? Ok... the first thing I would try is trashing the preference file.
go to: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences. Locate this file:
com.apple.word.plist. Drag it to the Trash, then empty the Trash.
Reboot your Mac. Try to launch Word now. If that doessn't do the trick I suggest you reinstall the Word software. Somehow, someway for reasons we don't totally understand software can become corrupted. Sometimes trashing that .plist file will work, but when that doesn't do it, just reinstall the software. I realize you already tried reinstalling the software, but run Disk Utility (see next paragraph) after you reinstall. That might just do it. Also, if you could indicate which Mac OS you are running when you post, that would help us to determine how to go about troubleshooting your issue.
Also, if you are not already doing so, run Disk Utility (in your Applications>Utility folder). Launch Disk Utility and then select Macintosh HD in the panel of the left. Then click, "Repair Permissions"... that can cure a myriad of Mac ills :-)
Post back if you need further assistance.

hi,
well first off, i am running OSX Tiger 10.4
i tried what you said. first off, i could not even find that com. apple.word.plist file. it was not in the list with all of the other ones that started the same. so i ran disk utility, and reinstalled the program, nothing...
could it have something to do with fonts? i do design so i have a huge load of fonts. i dunno, the reason i thought to ask was becasue during start up in WORD it never gets beyond "optimizing font menu" but, not fonts are activated in Font Agent Pro.
thank you
joek.

DeltaMac... thank you for the heads up! I agree, the Archive and Install using the system disk that came your Mac should do the job!

Hi Joek,
Pardon me, I should have been more clear. The Archive and Install installation option is used to replace the System-level components of Mac OS X while offering an additional option to preserve both your Users folder and network settings. This is as opposed to an Erase and Install which erases your hard drive before installing Mac OS X. In order To Archive and Install, just insert your system disk that came with your Mac. Everything you need to know is at this link:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Archive and Install is different from Erase and Install in that it won't touch your files. They will remain as they were.
If you still need assitance, please post back.
Regards,
Carolyn :-)
