I am still using Word X on my 10.4.1 Tiger.
I get frequent quits when I am editing text. Sometimes while trying to drag, other times unknown reasons. I tried Mactopia for answers, but got too lost in their web of pages.
I can re-start back up quickly, but it is a frustrating and time consuming process.

***PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE REPLY BEFORE DOING ANYTHING TO YOUR SYSTEM.***
I still have Word X on one of our systems that did something similar to this, and in the end it turned out to be a corrupted font that was causing the problem.
In your user folder inside Documents, there should be a folder called Microsoft User Data.
I recommend that you copy this to a different but safe location, and restart your system, after making sure it is removed from its current location.
This folder contains a lot of information depending on what other parts of Office X you use, for example if you use Entourage, it has all your Email and addresses for Entourage in it.
If you have another drive attached, copying Microsoft User Data to that drive would be even better. What we are trying to do, is to make sure that Word cannot access it and use the data in it.
Then try opening Word X to see if that has cured the problem. Word will act as if it is the first time you have used it and take a bit longer to startup.
If you can't afford to lose anything from that folder we will need to go back to the original folder you backed up (Not on the Desktop), and not in your documents folder, to replace those items in the new folder of the same name that will be created when you first relaunch Word.
There are also other fonts in your Mac and Font Caches including other Microsoft ones, but this is a good place to get started.
Please READ the following carefully.
Now when you run Word, it will act as if it is being run for the first time, but there is a possibility that word may crash on startup, especially if we have not managed to get to the source of the problem. This is only a remote possibility, but has happened on occasion.
Please be aware of these issues if you really depend on Word for your work.
If you feel that you cannot risk losing Word and do not have the means to reinstall it, let me know. There are other ways to address this problem, they may take a bit longer but at least they should not compromise your Word installation.
Removing and Reinstalling Word X ( as a cure)
If you have the installer CD handy, and have moved your Microsoft User Data to another location, you can go to the Install CD and instead of drag installing your software, there should be an installer application on the CD.
Somewhere in this Installer application is the uninstaller needed to remove completely the current installation of Word.
Just dragging word to the trash will not work as when you first open Word after installation, it creates files all over your system that you will need to uninstall, properly to ensure a clean reinstallation. THe program for this purpose should be on the Software CD.
Once you have done all this, you should then be able to reinstall Word and any other Microsoft appliations you use. Giving you a clean install.
RECOMMENDATION.
Make sure you can access the Word X CD and run the Install application on it. You are running an older application on a very new OS and some of the older Installers do not work. You should be able to check on Microsft's web site, for this information and possibly a fix if the original installer does not work.
This is only for the purposes using the uninstaller, as wit hWord and other Microsoft Office applications, you can drag install them onto your Mac and they pretty much install themselves.
Note
Also there is an update to 10.4.1. It takes Tiger to 10.4.2, as this fix cured some issues with compatibility with some applications installing this update may help.
If you wish you can update your current software by going to Software Update under the apple menu, or you can download the Combo Update from Apples OS X support site and install it that way. Using the latter aproach, is handy if you ever have to reinstall your original OS, the Combo update will let you go from 10.4 straight to 10.4.2.
Let me know what happens and if you decide you want to go the long way around finding the problem OK.
