Hi! I'm really hoping that someone can help with this problem. I have a second hand "Quicksilver" Power Mac G4 that has 1GB ram and two 40GB hard drives in it. I recently installed a DVD drive into the machine and it was working great. Then I stupidly decided to try to load 10.4.7 on it without checking if it could handle it. Instead of saying that it couldn't handle the OS it just kind of died and now it will start up but nothing will show on the screen.

Is there anything I could try to revive this computer? I have tried loading in my old 1.0.4 disk that it came with and pressing down the c key but this hasn't worked.

Cheers

Jacqui

HI, as you have 2 drives in your Mac you should be able to install an earlier version of the OS onto one of them, as long as you can start up on the DVD or CD that comes with the OS Installer on it.

What I need to know is, when you startup your computer, are you unable to startup because the mac does not support 10.4.7, or because the DVD drive your installed will not work with it?

If it is the DVD that is causing all the problems, I would contact the manufacturer and tell them what is happening, it may be that the DVD needs a Firmware update in order to work.

Can you let me know what OS you had installed before you installed 10.4.7.

To the best of my Knowledge the G4 works with Tiger (10.4), I may be wrong but it is not that old of a system.

I do recommend installing 10.3.9 however as that was probably the best OS that Apple came out with that worked with the G4 G5, just not the Intel systems.

You should e able to reinstall an older OS on your mac, as long as you can startup on the Installer CD or DVD, that comes with the OS that you want to install.
To force the mac to startup on the CD, you should be able to Hold the C key down, as you are starting up the computer, and as long as the DVD you installed is workig OK, you should then be able to replace the newer OS on your startup drive, or as a last resort, go ahead and reinstal a system on your second Drive.

Let me know what that little lot does and we will take it from there OK.

Stuart
