I just got macgimp, and it needs to use x11 too, so we installed x11 but it doesn't seem to make gimp work. the only way i can get gimp to work is by logging in as a root user, but that means it's hard to get stuff over to my actual log in thing where all my stuff is.
When i try to run gimp without being the root thing the x11 icons shows up, the cursor turns into an 'x' but nothing happens, and as soon as i move the cursor x11 disappears and gimp doesn't do anything(still).
Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease can someone help, because we're all out of ideas....
thanks.
oh, and when gimp doesn't work it says something about not being able to init fonts
We need a little more information to help you effectively.
1) Do you have an intel or a ppc mac? (If you are not sure, tell us what kind of mac you have e.g. iBook, iMac etc. and roughly when it was purchased.)
2) What version of Mac OS X do you have? To find out, go to the apple menu and "About this mac". The version will be 10.something.something e.g. 10.4.7 or 10.2.8.
3) How did you install X11? Where did you get it from? Possible places include the install CD that came with your computer, Apple's download pages, Fink, Darwinports etc.
4) Where did you get MacGimp and what version do you have? I am assuming you got it from the MacGimp website. If so, you probably gave them money and either got a CD or a download. If you have another version of Gimp (rather than MacGimp), that would be important to know.
5) Who were you logged in as when you installed Gimp? Was this an "admin" user?
6) Who were you logged in as when you first ran Gimp? Was this an "admin" user?
7) Is your ordinary account an "admin" account?
8) By "root" do you mean "an administrator" or do you *really* mean root? (Note that you can only log into root if you did something special to enable the root user. Root is disabled by default in OS X.)
**If you really need to log in as the root user to use Gimp, do not use Gimp. I would also disable the root user in this case until you have the problem sorted out, as something is very, very wrong.**
If you have to log in as an administrator to use Gimp, do so only if you are positive you know what you are doing and are certain you will not mess up your system. You should also do this only if you are aware of the risks and have taken steps to mitigate them.
Please let me know. I have some thoughts about what might be wrong, but I do not want to give you a laundry list of things to experiment with by trial-and-error. The information I've asked for should help me or, failing that another tech, narrow down the problem and respond accordingly.

1) computer is an ibook, ppc ( i think). pretty sure it was bought before apple switched over.
2) 10.4.7
3) x11 was installed off the osx disc.
4) It's the paid for macgimp. Figured spending £10 was worth it to save hassle getting it to work!
5,6,7) Was logged on as the default login. Only one login on this mac. I think it's an admin one, but not sure. How would i check?
8) root as in,

i tried using the root user after reading this thread:
