Hi,
On Apple's page about xGrid
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/xgrid/), it mentioned "special xGrid-enabled applications". Do applications have to have some sort of xGrid thing built into them to be used with xGrid, or do I have to set a certain option on my computer?

No, that's the great thing about xGrid! read through some of the other information about xGrid and Xgrid sharing, It's not about the applications that you use, although apps can be optimized for xGrid. All Macs with Panther, and now especially with Tiger, can be used as Xgrid clients to share in computing power with other Macs. You can easily turn on xGrid sharing in your Sharing pref pane, and (I guess) would then be able to join a grid when you have computing power to spare. You have to be running OS X Server to configure and control an xGrid, but any Mac can be an xGrid client.
If you search for xgrid in your Mac help, you will see a concise article about xgrid.
