John,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. Have you tried iChat? Does that give you the same message?
What kind of internet set up do you have? A router? A DSL Modem?

John,
Do you have an ethernet router also? Do you know how to log into the DSL modem's set up?
I have a suspicion that it is a firewall problem on the router or the modem.
I had the same problem with iChat and found how to change the settings on the firewall and the router in order to connect to with the chat program.
What model DSL modem do you have?
What model router - if you have one ?

John,
Now that I know your exact set up, I know what you need to do.
Go to System Preferences>Sharing. When that window loads, Click on the firewall tab.
Now click on the New button.
A new window will appear.
Port Name - This is a pull down menu. If you do not see iChat select Other.
TCP Port Number - 5190
UDP port Number - 5190, 5678, 5060, 16382-16403
Description - type in Chat.
Click on okay. The window disappears. Now scroll down the list in the Firewall panel and make sure your description shows and is check marked.
Now click on the Advanced button at the bottom right (still in firewall) and make sure all boxes are unchecked. (You can keep enable firewall log if you wish).
Click on the okay button, now close the System Preferences window.
Give Yahoo a try out.
If you would like to test it out, I have my chat on. I am

John,
I went checking about Yahoo's program and the only thing I got was that the Mac version of Yahoo messenger does not work well.
The solution I have is to download Fire. What is unique about Fire is that you can enter you MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, and Jabber accounts all in the one program. It will connect to the ones you want, And it can do file transfer. :-)
You can download it here:
http://fire.sourceforge.net/
Make sure you download the correct one for your OS version. The latest release is for 10.3 and 10.4.
