I have been using this internal burner for about 3 years with no problems. Last week I went to burn a disk and got this error:

The Drive has reported an error:
Sense Key=MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code=0x73, 0x03

I have a G4 400 tower (now a 1.4 gig)
I was using Toast to burn and tried 3 blanks I know were good.

Any fix fot this? If not, which CD, DVD or Superdrive makes/models are best.

Thanks in advance.

Ross,

Before you trash the burner, there are a few things to do to try to get it working again.

Go to Home>Library>Preferences.
From the View menu select By List. This will put everything in alpha order making it easier to find files.
Locate and trash the com.roxio.Toast.plist file. Empty the trash

Now check those blank CDs. Are they a new batch you just bought? Is it a +R or a -R? It could be that your burner can not handle the +R blanks. Also brands make a big difference and have an effect on burners. Use the brand that you were using previously.

In the Energy Saver panel (system preferences) set the computer to sleep to Never.

Make sure buffer underrun prevention is turned on.

Burn at a low speed try the 2X.

Try using Maxell CD cleaner disc on the burner. There might be some dust lodged on the eye preventing the burn.

Let me know how you do.

Thanks for your quick reponse Cheryl. The discs I have are ok ,as I used my external Lacie Firewire DVD/CD burner WITH Toast.
Now,I just managed to burn a disc with the finder succesfully with no problems in the problem drive. Also I started up Toast again and did the same, now all seems well.
I still will buy a cleaner just to make sure.

Thanks again,
Ross

Ross,

Glad things are back to 'normal'. Do you have any other questions or shall I close this ticket?
