though i'm definitely hooked on Adium, i couldn't seem to get Dock Detox to do anything... I still use AIM now and again for filetransfer over my college network, since no one here can even spell Macintosh. But thanks for all the help guys!

Adium is a REALLY good AIM-client, MUCH better than the offical one. It has very good customizing of the sock icon too;)

never heard of those... Fire is good. If you have the Dev Tools, you should compile the newest build from CVS. Adium is my favorite. Proteus is okay. I just tried it briefly. I only use AIM when someone insists on transferring an image or file over IM. I'd suggest dropping that bitch like a sack o' manure. Yet, it you must keep it, you should try Unsanity's Dock Detox...

Desktop backgrounds vs. performance

Theed, thanks for the reply. Can you explain, then, where the desktop background is? At least under Windows/PC's, I think it is stored in the video RAM. So if you run at True Color (32-bit), in a high resolution, with a large background image with a lot of colors, you had better hope you have a lot of video RAM. As to the other things, very true.
