my i mac was geting slower day by day, tried installing 1gb ram in addition to 512mb got a transcend 1gb from an authorised apple dealer did a erase install after taking backup, installion was smooth but now i cant updte my osx or firm ware what can be the problem i also have one external firewire disk 250 gb plugged in , what can be the problem ?

I've got this on a Quark doc that was created in 7.1 (with the update) and saved in 6, it worked between both these versions for a few weeks but now its turned into a UNIX Exec.
