Hi, Jeff! Thanks again. Tiger is very different than Jaguar (obviously) in function and also appearance. I have to be more careful about using once familiar features, because their interfaces may have subtle, or very clear, differences than previous versions of Mac OS X. And to think that I've been using the Mac since 1986...! :o I still miss hacking with...

Well, if you don't do a whole lot of printing, it wouldn't be too inconvenient to use BBEdit or BBEdit Lite (now discontinued). In the print dialog, select "BBEdit…" from the print options popup (the one that starts at "Copies & Pages." There you can select the option to print the code with page numbers. Now, if "highlighted" refers to formatting, I guess that wouldn't work…

I can hear the drive spinning down, but sometimes I do not hear it. I was using Mailsmith this evening and clicked on BBEdit on the Dock. The black arrow appeared beneath the BBEdit icon on the Dock, but nothing happened. ...

Thanks, Sourcehound! It seems to have worked. I opened the terminal, logged on as the "super user" (figuring that that would be required to give me the privelige to change things like that), typed "touch .bash_profile", typed "echo 'limit stacksize unlimited'", exited the super user mode, typed "ls -la", saw .bash_profile listed (I'm pretty sure it wasn't there before),...

If you're working with compilers on OS X, you have to make your peace with the Terminal. The only other recourse would be to use a programmer's text editor like BBedit or TextWranger, but working with the Terminal is real simple and very rewarding. You will need that skill. ...

My current favorite text editor is TextWrangler by BareBones. It's free as beer and has a lot of the great features of BBedit, only it's free as beer. It also installs a command line tool (edit) that allows you to open files from the command line within it. It also works well with Services. http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/index.shtml

urce code and let you edit it. They may also highlight code in different colours and provide features to help you with formatting. A good example of this type is BBEdit by BareBones software. ...

I have the need to edit, but mostly just browse really big files. A small file would be 1GB. Text Edit, BBEdit, Smultron and most others try to load the entire file into memory. Even with a GB of memory and a lot of time on my hands these files can take 10-15 minutes to load and forget about scrolling through them. Any ideas. RonMan
