I wonder if you have a USB 2.0 PC card, as your PowerBook would not use USB 2.0 on the internal ports. Burning with USB 1.1 can be really flaky at best, and surely very slow. The hardware error that you get may also indicate that the drive is just failed. ...

When I make a backup CD of such files (before opimizing, that is) - how do they get recorded onto the actual CD - as fragments (collected from all over the volume) or does each of these fragmented files get written onto a CD "in one continuous piece" so to speak? I use Toast for backups, and usually select a Mac OS Extended/PC Hybrid CD format for burning. Thanks in advance...

Yes, I've benn able to burn a disk using disk copy with no problem. But if i try to open Toast 6 it gives me the OS error -72000.
