G5 disk utilities

Get the newest version of DiskWarrior and it will boot fine. I wouldn't use Norton's on OS X again. Do some searching, it's cause a lot of people problems, and Symantec admits it's not completely compatible. With the built in maintanence and DW, that's about all you need. Get Cocktail from http://www.versiontracker.com and use that for various things. clecn cache, run...

tHANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. I did not think of the obvious. Your help is greatly appreciated. I am now up and running in Standard mode. That teaches an old geezer like me never to mess around with my system when it is running so well. :D

Logging in from Root

I am now trying to start up from the Panther install disc using the "Option" key on reboot. The machine again boots in "verbose?" mode and again tells me that the "root device is mounted read-only". Stuck again.

Finding the root of OSX

To access the root directory, simply double-click on your hard drive. That will open to the...

My Panther first Impressions and discoveries - Post here

Except for re-binding, very good system tune-ups (prebinding runs automatically whenever needed in the background since Jaguar, probably by the same trigger that runs an automatic de-frag under Panther) I've read a couple of articles that show how manual pre-binding is not relevant for Jaguar (and by extension, Panther), HOWEVER, I sometimes do a re-bind anyway, and there...
