I need to temporarily transfer everything to a laptop...

and they said that it's not really necessary, so long as you aren't really doing anything, and the apps that are running aren't writing to the disk either. Typically, I restrict my activities, during a backup, to Web surfing, and only if I absolutely have to do look something up, or work on something. ...

HD dismounts spontaneously

It did this in X.4.5 and I'd hoped applying the combo updater to X.4.6 might fix the problem, but no such luck. The HD runs quiet and I've run Disk Warrior to repair it's directories. I'm stumped and would appreciate any suggestions... ...

Sparse Images Be Used for Backups?

Dennis... I've been using SuperDuper in this fashion for some time now, as an added bonus, if your image is of a bootable drive, it can be restored from Disk Utility when you boot from your install CDs-DVD in an emergency situatiion. Takes about 20-30 minutes from disaster to up and running again.

Transferring data from old, defect iBook to new?

You can't simply drag the data from one drive to another under OSX; certain files are owned by root and you won't have permission to move them. You can do this if you log in as root but even then it will not create a bootable drive as the system folder will need to be "blessed" If your new iMac is an Intel model then it is unlikely you will be able to clone the PPC...
