Hi! I have the same problem about the error code 36, i'm trying to copy some files, (about 100Gb) from a Western Digital 500Gb external drive to another (same model) both formatted in MacOS Journaled; but just in the middle of the transfer, the error code pops up... I just can't loose that information. I tried to use DiskWarrior, DiskUtility, Tech Tool, you name it......

Ah, gray as it shipped with that Mac. If you have 10.4 installed on that Mac now, then 10.4 Disk Utility should do to fix it. That error message isn't too clear on what part failed. I'd make sure I have a clean backup of all your data, try something like DiskWarrior (if you have that application). And if those fail, make sure there are no hardware errors reported on...

Other times, when that fails, I boot from a DiskWarrior CD. Sometimes it can't see the internal HD. Other times it sees it, and when I run DW, it does find errors to fix. ...

Other suggestions before going the erase and install: •Try safe boot (start up while holding the shift key), it will repair your drive •Unplug any peripherals before starting up •Get and use Diskwarrior to repair any directory damage •Reapply the most recent COMBO updater for your OS version. Though system crashes (or kernal panics) are usually due to hardware...

I just got a G4 Agp 450 and decided to take my hard drive out of my B&W G3 and install it in the G4 and do an upgrade to 10.4x from 10.3.9. Did the whole upgrade thing and got the gray apple with the spinner screen. I won't go into the 7 hrs. of things I did last night (I couldn't even get into single-user mode or run fsck) but everything checked out right on the diskwarrior...

fsck is a drive utility built into OS X, but it's not as capable as Diskwarrior et al. It's okay for minor file errors. ...

I think you're right. The best thing for me to do now is to buy a new internal HD, install OSX and, if I like, get a copy of DiskWarrior and see if I can recover the data. At best, I'll have my data, but have lost the amount of a new HD. At worst, I've lost the data AND my money. ...

ly, if it is a directory error you can usually "see" the drive on Disk Utility even if it cannot repair it. There is a slight chance that DU does not see it but DiskWarrior will. I do not know your finances, but you could consider replacing the HD and getting DW. ...

most obvious. There are all sorts of things people do to try to save data. I have had DiskWarrior recognize a dying drive to save data. ...
