Maybe you should get a GOOD disk fixing utility like Alsoft's DiskWarrior. Plus LaCie IMHO is not the best for firewire externals. Just search this board and you will see hundreds of LaCie problems as well as on other boards. You would be better of going with a drive from OWC.

Start by using DiskUtility on your start up DVD and repair the HD and permissions. Check the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive, in case there is a hardware problem, by selecting the Drive (not the volume) and reading the disk description at the foot of the Disk utility window. If that doesn't work try DiskWarrior, it usually clears up problems like this.

It showed up at first in the Finder but when I tried to access the files, the Finder hung, wouldn't relaunch and I was forced to reboot. Since then I've been getting the "unable to list" message. Here's everything I've tried: Rebuild directory with DiskWarrior Restarted with all cables...

I am totally flummoxed by this one. I don't understand what's happening and I don't know quite where to go or what to do. I have tried carefully to document what I did as I went along. Advice on where to go/what to do now would be most welcome. Bob **********

Thanks. Yeah, after having been "PC" all these years I agree that one becomes pretty paranoid. I'm just trying to get a handle on what folks out there use in their maintenance/preventive toolbox to keep their Macs running like new. I travel often and use airport/hotel internet. I already have Applecare and with it the Tech Tools. I'll get DiskWarrior. Now to decide what...
