What have your attempted fixes been so far? Disk Uitlity, fsck, DiskWarrior, dumping preferences, etc ? If you've done these things, you might want to consider using the 10.2.6 combo updater before doing anything else. There's a program called Pacifist that will extract programs from the OS CD. if you can connect that maxtor by firewire, you might still have luck with diskwarrior. launch DW first and then plug in the bad drive. often it will recognise it at that point at be able to repair it. i've saved my externals a few times that way.

There was indeed a bad key length, repaired by Greg at the Mall of America Apple Store. He qouted me $50, but I bought the program he used to do it (Alsoft's DiskWarrior), so they waived the service fee. Kewl!
