Ok, so I finally get a copy of DW. I reboot into it blah blah blah, and I first do a graph which says like 34% is out of order or wahtever.. so I start rebuilding..and it gets to Step no. 5 (i think) where it says Locating Directory.. Before you reinstall the system run Disk Utility and do a Repair Permissions on your startup disk. Also, if you can boot off another disk and run DiskWarrior all the better. You definitely don't want to install on a damaged disk. If you don't have DiskWarrior then you may not need to worry. ...

Thanks to all with the helpful hints. I'll try the fixes you guys offered. The Drag and Drop issue seemed to have been fixed by DiskWarrior, but the permission problem still exists. As far as I know my wife's account does not have any admin priviledges. All of those point to my account but she still has access. I'll try using the Inspector to change things.

My Pismo has only got a 8Mb ATI Rage card and it definitely slows window drawing and font-smoothing down. However, the old beach-ball rarely comes up anymore, so it's not too bad. Well, that 128 MB of RAM may be an issue. Have you tried creating a new Administrative user, to see if you still get the hard drive churning? I had a Sawtooth that churned and churned with the original user I created. I created a new user and found the problem disappeared when that new user logged in. Eventually I traced the issue to bad prefs file(s), but I don't remember...

Try using Disk Utility - Have it scan and make all the repairs. You need to get DiskWarrior (for OS X which is version 3.x) or Drive 10.
