I've used Flip4Mac before (a version or two ago) and it worked alright. They've since upgraded it to support newer WMV versions, which was about the only issue I had with it back then.

It looks like most WMV->MOV converters are Windows-only. You could try Flip4Mac's WMV plug-in along with QuickTime Pro, but no guarantees it'll work: http://flip4mac.com/

I know it's been several months since you posted this suggestion, but I tried Flip4Mac, and it solved my problem, so I bought it. I really appreciate the tip.

The WMV player from flip4mac works perfectly on my Mac Mini (1.25 GHz) but not quite so great on my iMac G4 (800 MHz). CPU speed seems to be of the essence here...

WMV files are hit-and-miss on Mac OS X. You can use VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player (both available from http://www.versiontracker.com). If they play, they play. If they don't, they don't. Flip4Mac has a product that can play WMV files in QuickTime, and I find it decent at best. Some WMV files still don't play, and the ones that do stutter and flicker in and out...

There's Flip4Mac's WMV Player, which lets you play WM9 content in QuickTime. It can't do WM10, though, or copy-protected content. But I don't think that will help with the streaming problem.

For wmvs, you can download Windows Media Player and play them with that, or buy Flip4Mac's WMV decoder ($9.99) so you can play them with QuickTime. For .vid, I'm not quite sure. I've never seen a .vid file. My advice is to try VLC, and maybe Windows Media Player (I assume you've already tried QuickTime Player, right?). Hope this helps.

These are all the codecs you need: Divx - Necessary to properly read the audio from most AVI files. No need to dance and prance with "doctoring" them before opening. (Edit: I just noticed that the Divx web site says it does not support QT7 or Tiger, but it works fine for me.) AC3 codec - for decoding audio in the rare AVI that uses AC3 (the codec used on DVDs) instead of...

If you use Flip4Mac's WMV Player ($10; free demo available) to play WMV files in QuickTime, you're probably annoyed that you can't simply drag 'n' drop WMVs onto QuickTime Player's icon. It's also a bit of a secret these days that QuickTime Player can play (some) Flash (.swf) files. But again, you can't drag 'n' drop them. Here's how to enable drag-and-drop for both WMV and...
