ffmpegX is most likely a lost cause. It cannot decode WMV3 video, which is the most recent codec used in WMV files. The only way to view/convert those files on the Mac, aside from WMP, is Flip4Mac's WMV Player.

Divx 5. Or if that doesn't work, try the Divx 6 beta. But if you've been playing these movies in WMP, then they're not Divx. If these are .wmv files you're talking about, try Flip4Mac's WMV Player for QuickTime.

Compressor is the best option for OS X. I think it's only available as part of the Final Cut suite though. What's really great about Compressor is that you can make Droplets. So basically you just drag your video files on the Droplet and it encodees it based on that Droplet's settings. Also, if you get Flip4Mac's WMV for Quicktime components, you can even use Compressor to...

Your options depend on what kind of WMVs you're dealing with. If it's using WMV2 as a video codec, you can convert it to DVD using ffmpegX. I just wrote another post about this two minutes ago, so check that out if you're interested. If it's using WMV3, though, then ffmpegX can't handle it. In that case, your only option is to buy Flip4Mac's WMV Player. It will let you...

Here's the thing: Windows Media Player on the Mac does little more than lag behind its PC counterpart. It is slow, ugly, and doesn't play many formats at all. Flip4Mac is fine for some streams, but if they're continuous, you'll just get a "?" logo over the QT window. Really, your best bet is to write a letter (on paper) to the organisation, asking nicely that they...

Please somebody savvy and shrewd, help me! As with others, I paid the Real Player subscription, but now CNN is free, yeah! But… I cannot get it to play well. Two days of various support groups and reinstalling has improved the situation, but not resolved the buffering problem. I use CNN, BBC, etc streaming video in my classroom and in my studies. I am in a postgrad in...

Short answer. No. They are unusable on the Mac. Long answer: WMV3 (which is the actual name of the Windows Media Player 9 video codec) is a proprietary codec. Unlike preview WMV formats, it isn't "close enough" to existing standards for third-party developers, like those behind VLC, to support. So there are not many programs capable of decoding the data. The only other...
