Open "Font Book" in your /Applications folder, then add them there -- that's Apple's built-in solution, however... ...I would recommend a better font management solution: LinoType FontExplorer X, available here: http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX

It does sound like a font issue to me. I would suggest you use a third party font managment system. We use Suitcase X1 here and it works ok. Still get the odd issue but on the whole is a lot easier to use than font book. ...
