This doesn't work for me, either. I think this was an OS 9 feature, though. By the way, ElDiablo: the key commands for copying screenshots to the clipboard is with the CONTROL key, not the option key. So you would press Command-Control-Shift-3 to copy a screenshot to the clipboard, and Command-Control-Shift-4 to copy a "selective" screenshot to the clipboard
