My understanding is that there's no way around it on Intel Macs (yet). On PPC Macs, I've never had problems with VLC. You could also try playing the DVDs with MPlayer or ripping them with MacTheRipper.

Whether you use XP or EP recording shouldn't matter, it'll just reduce the video quality. If you plan to import as DVD format you'll need something like Mactheripper (a free program) to transfer it as a Video TS folder (mostly .vob files) to your Powerbook's hard drive. Movies on "standard" DVDs are usually compressed. When MTR rips one, the output VIDEO_TS folder is uncompressed. That's why you see 8gb file sizes. MiniDVD's are DVDs and are not intended to be edited. You have to use MacTheRipper or Handbrake to RIP the miniDVD to video file in an editable format. ...

I would rip the DVD with MacTheRipper, making sure to strip off all region coding, and then use either Toast Titanium, Popcorn, or DVD2OneX to burn it to a new DVD.
