Well, video takes a lot more process then most things. Whether that is normal or not depends on what kind of computer/notebook you have. Also, what kind of file are you playing? for example: AVI, MPG, MP4....

If you max the RAM out and work with Universal Binaries as software, the MBP should actually be quite a bit faster. Then again, newer software tends to still use more RAM per se, so even the maximum 3 GB might be strangling your work with the scans. Notebook harddrives _are_ slower than their desktop counterparts. The rpm-number is only half the story. But you can of course...

I've found that when I leave my notebooks monitor open and let it go to sleep by simply not touching anything, I can't pull my notebook out of sleep mode unless I close the monitor and open it again. Moving the mouse or hitting an endless amount of keys on the keyboard won't get it to wake up. ...

After rereading your intial post, it says that you initially were using an external trackball. Are you still using that mouse? Since your on a trip, I'm going to gather that you have a notebook. What if you use the notebooks mouse, does that freeze?

I'm not exactly sure I completly understand. So just after I turn the notebook on, I push and hold the option button, and boot off of the external drive. Does it then use the external drive for virtual memory? ...
