What do you mean by "locked up"?. Unless the drive is physically damaged, you can still install a new system, even if the current one has a password. If you need a replacement drive, you'll need a 2.5" notebook-size IDE drive - NOT SATA. OWC has a good reputations for selling Mac parts, eBay can be iffy sometimes (but cheaper).

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere in my iBook System Profiler and/or manual that the most RAM you can add to this particular model is 512MB. It's still slower than your iBook running say.. Word. Especially with the amount of RAM it ships with. Also, you already know this, but 256 MB RAM is not going to give you even near to the performance your iBook can achieve. Sony hasn't had as many exploding laptops as Apple or Dell but it has had a few exploding laptops, the reason Sony's own products aren't being affect as much is because Sony just doesn't have the costumer base of Dell or Apple.
