I am having trouble with distortion in iTunes. If I play the file via preview, or QT, they will play fine. Crossfade, soundcheck, sound enhancer are all off, the EQ is also off. I have also found that that bitrate displayed in the pre-import mp3 is 128... After import the bitrate is 172(VBR). If I convert them to aiff, the distortion is carried into the new file. ...

I'm a bit confused about the two macs ... are you certain the iMac is a G4? Is it the Flat Panel mac or the all-in-one with the coloured back that may or may not be transparent? These photos that are not loading properly, where are they stored? In the iPhoto Library Folder in Pictures? If you Ctrl/Right-Click the image in the Library window and select "Show File" and then when the Finder window opens to reveal it, double-click on the original, which should open in Preview.
