Nope, those commands are machine-dependent, not operating system-dependent. My G4 Yikes! runs OS X and OS 9 just fine, but does not support holding either 'X' or 'option' at startup. The AGP-based G4 machines were the first to support selecting a boot volume at boot time via the option key. I believe they were the first to also support the 'X' and '9' keys for OS X and OS...

DVD Playback Stutters With Subtitles

Hm. I don't think that QT plugins would affect DVDs' subtitles that badly. Rather, I *do* think it has to do with graphics card drivers. Do you have a different graphics card handy that you could try? The Quicksilver should support an AGP-card, which would probably be much better.

Frequent crashes, dock prefs not working

I think that was one of the first to support "big drives". Do you have any PCI cards installed? An archive and install would be helpful to isolate the problem. If you have a spare hard drive, you could test a clean install on that.

APPLE support now utterly useless

The iBOOK is running 10.3.11 so I don't know which animal that is, but from what I understand @ 700mhz, it's the highest I can go on that one. The version of Safari is the 1.3. When I attempted to upgrade to 1.3.1, after downloading, I get a message that says "this system will not allow this" or something similar after the installation program performed it's function to see...
