Thanks for the reply. I don't have the original disks for this machine, and the hardware test isn't on the OS install DVD. I've got the disks for my old Quicksilver G4, but AHT is machine-specific and won't run on the G5. Do you know of a way to get a copy other than waiting for Apple to send one?

Once the bug occurs, it happens with all apps that are launched. It's been happening at least since 10.4.8, IIRC. Not sure about QuickSilver's role, as I've had it installed continuously for some time now. QuickSilver is up to date. I'll have to check console next time it occurs.
