Quicktime

I found that a mpeg 1 file from a friend cannot be authored in Quicktime Pro ( cut / paste) . Another file in mpeg 4, with video and audio tracks split, could be authored. How can I covert the mpeg 1 file to make it authorable? The mpeg 4 converted to dvd in ffmpegx but the same attempt with the mpeg 1 just left me with an mpeg 2 (ffmpeg) and seprate audio file. So. We've been through this thouroughly. Quicktime & !tunes will not launch. I've tried everything from repairing the permissions, to removing the .plist's, to reinstalling quicktime.
