I'm not quite sure what you mean by No Choice ... but you can set which media types you want the Quicktime plugin to handle in browsers, in System Preferences/Quicktime/ Advanced. Check mp3 and iTunes should not open. Firefox has an extension for choosing players ... but the simplest thing, if you are talking about listening to music in the browser, is to assign all those...

This problem does not seem isolated to iTunes - there is a lag when I am doing normal tasks like browsing the internet and other very basic stuff. Periodically (way more than normal) the cursor freezes and after a second or two it changes to the spinning beach ball. After 2-3 seconds everything I typed catches up and the applications respond but seriously this is ridiculous....

FWIW, a .mov video is likely to be MPEG-4 or .h264. Like .mov, .avi is a container format which tells you little about the format of the video therein. Many but not all .avi videos are in DivX format. QuickTime Pro can handle all of your conversions. ffmpegX will also handle them.

The only applications I have added to my Mac are "Office for Mac 2004" and "Quicken 2007". My Leopard installation has QuickTime 7. ...
