You definitely can't do it with RDC, but with VNC there is a way to disable input on the client (meaning your keyboard & mouse movements aren't sent to the server) which is effectively an observe mode. I know the Windows clients have a checkbox to disable the input but I'm not sure off hand which (if any) of the OS X clients support it... but it doesn't depend on the server...

RDC works very fine indeed. I'm using it all the time, as I need the 17" TFT for my Mac. ;-) Faster than using VNC, although VNC of course is cross-platform, which makes it better for some cases (for example if you have a Mac, a linux and a Windows box and want to be able to control all of them from any of them).

VNC allows you to access desktops remotely. It works on Windows, MacOS and Unix. I think pretty much every combination is possible, e.g. accessing Unix from Windows or Windows from Mac. It looks like you log into that machine if it was locally. As was said above, VNC is a cheap alternative to Apple Remote Desktop. If you want to access Windows machines only, then you can...
