All I really have on my computer that I would like to recover, if something did happen, is my writing and my music. That's pretty much it. And I can back up copies of those things on CDs. Plus, it's a lot cheaper than buying an external HD. ;)

When I backup I don't backup the system per se, since I have the OS install disks. Presumably if the hard disk dies you would have a new disk and probably people would recommend starting with a new fresh installation of the OS. ...

Huge number of files on disk
170,000 files seems about normal! I manage some servers with 500,000 files. OS X is a very complex OS, so don't waste your time trying to get rid of the files.
