I think pds has stated things very eloquently already, so I'll only add a few notes of my own. I was, of course, putting forward an alternative angle to counter what you had posted.

Wherever you put them when you backed up -- it depends on what you did to backup those playlists. Did you use Apple's Backup software, or some 3rd party software like Retrospect? Or, did you manually back them up by coping the playlists to somewhere else? Long story short, if you haven't made a backup, then there's no backup to recover them from. OS X doesn't back up...
