don't use tar :) stuffit is probably your best bet, and dropstuff is free. or you could make a compressed disk image if you have something against stuffit.

and Stuffit auto-expanding (I think)... plus sometimes it gets stuck with the .php suffix. Just amend the suffix (as long as you remember/find out what the correct one is (normally .zip for me).
