Unreadable Labels under my icons

these are all symptoms of lack of space on your main disk. best bet is to buy a new big disk and install it in your g4 (although don't go bigger than ~120gb, as your g4 won't be able to see anything that exceeds a 128gb drive) and these can be had for less that £50, then use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to clone your existing disk accross, then set the...

Partitioning HD no recommended?

Quoting from p.17 of Fantom FW HD manual re Mac users: "Q. Can I partition the external Hard Drive? A. Not recommended." Also, in Iomega's online manual (only accessible from their installation CD, strangely) for the Black series FW/USB2.0 HD: nearly identical Q & A. I'm not using one partition to back up another partition on the same drive - the safety clone on the...

Powerbook won't load desktop.

Everything was backed up so we were all good. That and I could start in target disk mode for some reason. Plus why spend money on a hard drive when you can put it twards a new mac. :) I returned my external hard drive and put the money twards a new iMac. Much nicer. ;)

Cannot switch hard drives

"Blessed" is a term in BSD (Mac OS X core) of saying the drive will be able to be booted from. Certain Backup programs only archive in their own special backup file. If you want to boot from those drives (must be internal or firewire) you need to have a backup program that will "bless" the drive after backup up. There are two programs IMHO that make the grade to making...

Backup 3

I'd bet that for the purposes of restoring your Mac, you need to use Backup. In the future, however, if you just want to make regular backups, say, to an external Hard Drive, there are tons of other programs out there for you. Carbon Copy Cloner & SuperDuper! are two favorites. Both of these apps will simply copy files to another loaction, thus useable universally. If...
