I have three Macs running X.4.6 (700 iBk G3, mini G4, & G4 Dual). I also have three external Firewire HDs. I use all three HDs on all three Macs to clone bkups with SuperDuper. One of the HDs spontaneously dismounts from the G4 Dual (the other two work fine). The one that dismounts works fine on the other two Macs (this HD's an Acomdata 60GB). It did this in X.4.5 and I'd...

I just used SuperDuper to do a restore of the data that was on my 30GB drive to the new 100GB internal drive that I added to my iBook. It was great. ...

Dennis... I've been using SuperDuper in this fashion for some time now, as an added bonus, if your image is of a bootable drive, it can be restored from Disk Utility when you boot from your install CDs-DVD in an emergency situatiion. Takes about 20-30 minutes from disaster to up and running again.

Seems that SuperDuper can do exactly what I want here. Sparse images can be created, encrypted or not, and then mounted. ...

Just get SuperDuper. It works great and your Firewire drive will serve as more than an emergency "bootable". I use two FW drives each divided into two partitions and SuperDuper. Once you have it you can decide on the best strategies and possibly change them over time to best suit your needs. http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

I'm going to install 10.4.6 via combo, on my external HD safety clone AKA "Sandbox", courtesy of SuperDuper!, so if it bombs, my 10.4.5 on the internal HD won't be affected. Kind of nice to have a Sandbox to play in and try out new software and updates. If all goes well, I'll then install it on the internal HD. iMac G5 iSight w/1.5GB. Dale.

Quoting from p.17 of Fantom FW HD manual re Mac users: "Q. Can I partition the external Hard Drive? A. Not recommended." Also, in Iomega's online manual (only accessible from their installation CD, strangely) for the Black series FW/USB2.0 HD: nearly identical Q & A. I'm not using one partition to back up another partition on the same drive - the safety clone on the...

I'm creating a full clone of the internal HD on the larger partition, and a "safety clone" (the SuperDuper! Sandbox) on the smaller partition, from which I will run the computer. It is preferred that this be done on the external HD, not on the internal HD for various reasons. This can't be done without partitioning (which most users take to mean splitting into 2 or more...

Everything was backed up so we were all good. That and I could start in target disk mode for some reason. Plus why spend money on a hard drive when you can put it twards a new mac. :) I returned my external hard drive and put the money twards a new iMac. Much nicer. ;)
