Try PixelNhance. It's freeware, very easy to use, and should handle just about anything you want to do. Ed, are you perchance referring to GraphicConverter? That's what your description sounds like. To me, it was definitely worth the $35, but you can also use it for free if you can endure an annoying "countdown" when you launch it. :D

DiVX plays fine for me... ALL in QuickTime. The major issues were the old MP42 DiVX files but that has been addressed and fixed a few days ago. Here is a lost of all the available DiVX tools for OSX.
