You'll need to get some sort of usenet reader. Head on over to versiontracker.com and look for one. Then you'll have to choose a usenet server. There's not a whole lot going on there--it used to be a happening place a dozen years ago.

You said you didn't know what else to do :) It's usually corrupt Fonts, Caches or Preference files when a problem shows up only in one account. Validate your Fonts. Font Book > All Fonts > choose one then Command + A to choose all > File menu > Validate Fonts. Use a maintenance tool like Onyx to clear System and User Caches.

The update basically turns on Journaling and instructs you to boot from the installation DVD to repair the volume. AFAIK it _should_ be in Software Update if needed (I don't have an affected...

In Tiger click on the SpotLight Icon (The blue icon in the top left corner) and enter the name of the program you want. Another way is to download the shareware Launchbar or the freewares Butler or QuickSilver. Any of these should fit your need. For a Terminal script to launch programs fast read this hint. For a quick HowTo read this.

I assumed on the Mac you enabled Windows File Sharing on you Mac and also let it through the built in Firewall, right? Also take a look at SharePoints for more control over sharing to PCs. Plus make Windows be able to to see and read and right to a Mac HFS+ drive (just like any other native drive) install HFS Explorer on the Windows box (or the more polished shareware...
