CronniX will let you edit the system (root's) crontab. You can get it here: http://www.koch-schmidt.de/cronnix/ To change when the system runs its optimization routines, choose File>Open System Crontab. Enter your adminstrator password and then change the values to something similar to what is pictured here:

This is a graphical utility for configuring cron jobs. You will still need to know the cron terminology, but it makes it so much easier. http://www.koch-schmidt.de/cronnix/

You are expecting a field "user" in your crontab and entered "root", but there's no such field in OSX's crontab. So you are trying to run the command: root /usr/libexec/atrun Just remove the "root" and you should be fine.
